After you have learnt about the form and use of present continuous tense, here I will present you to the spelling rule of verbs + ING.There are some changes when we add "- ING" to the verbs.

  • Spelling rule of verbs + ING

1. Most verbs add "-ING" to the base form.

base verb
past simple
past participle
become
became
become
come
came
come
drive
drove
driven
talk
talked
talked

Look at this table to get to know what the base verb is. There are three columns in the table of verbs. The first column presents the base verbs.

Ex: talk -talking
 sleep-sleeping
 tell-telling...

2. Verbs that end in -e,drop the -e and add -ING.

Ex: come-coming
     drive-driving
     take-taking

Note: in this aspect, except verbs ending in -ee. We just add "-ING" to the verbs.

Ex: see- seeing
      flee-fleeing
     agree-agreeing

3. One-syllable verbs which end in a vowel and a consonant; double the last consonant and add -ING.

Ex:   run -running
       stop-stopping
       swim-swimming

Note: We do not double the last consonant if  the verbs ending in a vowel + -x,-w,and -y.

Ex: fix-fixing
     play-playing
    show-show

4. Verbs that end in -ie change the -ie to y and add -ING.

Ex:  tie-tying
       lie-lying
